How I Make My Flash Cartoons

Posted by TinFoi - January 11th, 2025

I'll be shocked if anyone takes the time to read this.

I'm going to get asked this question eventually, so I might as well answer it early.

Let's get "straight" into it! (See what I did there?)

So here's my weapon load out

  1. A Computer obviously.
  2. Printer Paper
  3. Scanner
  4. Macromedia Flash 4 (Any animation program will work, you just need audio support)
  5. Gimp (To me, this is optional)
  6. Audacity (Any audio program is fine)
  7. Reaper (for music)
  8. Speakonia
  9. Electric Guitar (A Bass, 6, 7, or 8 string will work just fine! It's not like I have all 4)
  10. Swivel (to export!)

I start off with the voices in Speakonia! Everything comes from the mind, so no script, lol. I downloaded a Microsoft SDK so I could get the other voices I'll use in the future!

Then I mix it all down in Audacity, I'd already know how the timing would go, because in no way I am throwing a bunch of .wavs into Flash, just one or 3 is fine.

(Note. If I can't do the sound effects in real life, I pull them from external sources, which are CC0)

For music, I'd throw it in last minute at 3 AM, do a random riff or chug fest on my guitar, and hope it comes out good.

(Can be heard in "Remember when our prices were affordable?" and my latest cartoon, "Gibson's Cannibal Meat Taco Truck.")

Or if I don't have the time at all, I'll just throw in a random tone and edit it.

Once I export it into a wav at 44100 hz, I can finally get to the animating part!

(Dark theme wasn't introduced until Flash CC 2000 and something, so I use a modified Windows theme with a custom cursor. Will I tell you how to get that? Nah)

Now I'll admit, I can't draw a straight line for shit, which is why the characters are all squiggly, yet simple.

I first draw how I want my canvas to be. Why? I don't know, it became a habit.

I then throw in a mask, so everything can stay inside the canvas

I animate the characters inside their symbol, and then switch the frames on the timeline. I should probably program a Movie-Clip to do that for me cause it takes WAY too long. Then again, I'm already a lazy guy that takes the long route.

I just keep the default 12 FPS because I'm too lazy to change it, or in rare cases, I'd crank it to 30, just to sprinkle in another retro factor.

Fun Fact! With animating the entire Movie in a symbol, you could get away with memory limits, and even do cool shit like this!

If I had made Gibson's Taco Truk in early 1999 to early 2002, and tried to submit it to Newgrounds, It'd crash the whole site, and probably my computer if I even tried running it, lol (Somehow, the SWF is 2.88 MBs, I thought it would be more)

Lastly, I'd throw my SWF into Swivel, then post it to Newgrounds and Youtube (Shameless Plug)

I hope I could make a timelapse soon, showcasing the long process it takes for me to fix up a Cartoon for y'all.

If you have any questions about this process, leave it in the comments!

Now if you'd excuse me, I'll go create a pixel art piece.

How did you get that version of flash? Did you have it before, and do you still have the license or did the adobe already take it from you?

I had it before yeah, and how can adobe take the license from me? Especially on software from 1999, lol

@TinFoi I’ve seen some people that did get theirs informally removed (they could still use the software, but at the risk of something along the lines of “third party” being able to take “legal action” or something close to that).
I sure wish I got to have an actual decent computer before flash went dead through.

If you do have a computer, you could get a copy of flash from the internet archive.

Wow really cool breakdown of how you make the animations. Would you consider upgrading to flash 8? It was the last version of flash before adobe bought it, and I think it would have more features than flash 4 while still keeping the retro style. :) You can find it on archive.org im sure.

I could consider soon.

I'm just preferring Flash 4 for right now due to the simplicity and feel, I did try switching to MX2004 a while back, way before I made a Newgrounds account, but it's painfully slow loading into a symbol on newer versions of Windows.
